4 DC Police Officers Wounded, Armed Standoff Ends After 13 Hours

Police were injured in a shooting and standoff in the 5000 block of Hanna Place Southeast Wednesday. An arrest was made 13 hours later.

WASHINGTON, DC — After an armed standoff that lasted more than 13 hours, a suspect accused of shooting four D.C. police officers was taken into custody in Southeast Washington, D.C., police confirmed on social media.

The man, who has not been identified, was barricaded in a residence until nearly 9 p.m. Wednesday when WTOP reported the suspect was in custody.

D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith told reporters at a briefing Wednesday evening that the gunman appeared to be alone in the home. Authorities do not know the identity of the suspect or if he lives in the home.

The suspect continued sporadically throughout the day to fire from a barricaded residence after officers tried to serve an arrest warrant for animal cruelty on behalf of the Humane Rescue Alliance to a residence on Hanna Place SE, WTOP reported.

Smith said the officers were shot in their feet and hands, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The suspect seems to be alone in the home and police negotiators are in “constant communication” with the suspect. Smith said they do not know the suspect's identity or if the person lives in the home, WTOP said.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to a shooting in the 5000 block of Hanna Place Southeast around 7:40 a.m.

Shortly after, police confirmed three officers suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. A fourth officer was also injured, police later said, but was not shot.

The D.C. Police Union also confirmed three members were shot and taken to local hospitals.

DC Fire and EMS were also assisting at the scene of the shooting.

Additional information was not immediately available.

Police closed several roads Wednesday morning as the investigation continued.

  • Benning Road in Southeast D.C. is closed both ways between Southern Avenue and East Capital Street.
  • G Street is closed between Benning Road and 51st Street.
  • 46th Street is closed towards Benning.
