WASHINGTON, DC — A meteorologist reporting on the tornado warnings in the Washington, D.C., area Thursday night took a moment mid-broadcast to call and warn his family.

Doug Kammerer, the chief meteorologist for NBC4, was conducting a weather report on live TV when he learned the tornado warning would affect his home.

"I'm tracking this so closely now, this is going to go right over my house," Kammerer said while using his phone to contact his kids. "So, very close to my house, which again is in the Chevy Chase, area, Bethesda area."

Kammerer then spoke with one of his children.

"I want you to get down in the basement. We got a tornado warning," Kammerer told his son.

After instructing his children to wait in a bedroom downstairs for 10 to 15 minutes, Kammerer resumed the broadcast. Kammerer said to viewers he had to warn his kids since they were likely playing games and not seeing the forecast. He later reported the kids were safe.

"Scary moment for me though, I was freaking out inside a bit," Kammerer tweeted.

While numerous areas were under a tornado warning, reports of damage were concentrated around Tysons. The National Weather Service would have to confirm tornado reports with damage assessments.

Kammerer is the station's chief meteorologist. He was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in northern Virginia, attending Herndon High School and Herndon Middle School. He has worked at NBC4 since 2010 after working for seven years in Philadelphia.

He has a degree in meteorology from the University of Northern Colorado. Kammerer and his wife, Holly, live in Maryland with their son and daughter.
