Amtrak Train Cars Derail At D.C.'s Union Station: Officials

DC Fire and EMS officials said two occupied train cars derailed Tuesday in a tunnel near the entrance to the station.

WASHINGTON, DC — Two Amtrak train cars derailed Tuesday in a tunnel near Union Station in Washington, D.C., causing delays but no significant injuries, according to officials.

In a statement posted on social media, DC Fire and EMS officials said the pair of occupied cars derailed in a tunnel near the entrance to the station. Officials called the derailment "minor" and said the two cars had left the tracks but remained upright inside the tunnel.

According to reports, the train was headed north into Union Station from Norfolk, Virginia, when the derailment occurred.

Fire officials and medics boarded the train but reported no serious injuries among the passengers, although one Amtrak employee was taken to a medical facility for a minor issue.

All passengers were moved to unaffected cars and taken to L’Enfant Plaza Station, fire officials said.

In a statement posted around 9 a.m., Amtrak officials said the derailment was affecting service between the District and Alexandria, Virginia. As of 10:30 a.m., Train 174 and Train 84 were being held in Alexandria, Amtrak said.

Several other routes were canceled Tuesday, WUSA9 reported, including:

  • Fredericksburg trains 301, 303, 305 and 315.
  • Manassas trains 325, 327, 329, 333 and 337.

In a statement to WUSA9, Amtrak spokesperson Kyle Anderson said the company "temporarily suspended between Washington and Richmond while crews inspect the area and work to re-rail the lead locomotive and coach car."
