D.C. Cop Hit By Car On I-295 By Suspected Drunk Driver

A driver was arrested at the scene, as the Metropolitan police officer was taken to the hospital in a helicopter.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Metropolitan police officer was seriously wounded when he was hit by a car on I-295 Saturday night, NBC Washington reported, citing the Metropolitan Police Department.

The officer was helping a driver in the southbound lanes of the interstate at Malcolm X Avenue SE just before 11 p.m. when he was hit by a driver suspected to be drunk, according to the report.

A helicopter responded to take the officer, who suffered serious leg injuries, to a hospital. The wounded Metro police officer is expected to survive, NBC reported.

The driver of the car that hit the officer was arrested at the scene. Official charges were not known as of 1 p.m. Sunday.
