The Cup of Hope tradition began in 2022 as a way to recognize the top fundraising team for MSABC of DC. Team Volanno has won the award three times out of the past four years, raising a total of $137,077 since they joined the walk in 2022.
Amore, who was diagnosed in 2019 and serves as the first MSABC Executive Ambassador, shared why she chose to support the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides movement: “I chose Making Strides because the research and support provided by the American Cancer Society not only advances treatment and survivorship for breast cancer, but also fuels breakthroughs that help fight all forms of cancer.” Amore also encouraged others to get involved in the fight against cancer. “We created Volanno Team Captains to expand our impact and strengthen our fundraising efforts. With the government shutdown and reductions in the federal workforce, we were unsure if we could meet our goal this year, but the incredible support from our community made this our most successful year ever. I’m also proud to have recruited Healthy Fresh Meals and Coffee Snobz as new sponsors as part of my Executive Ambassador role.”

Tswana Sewell, vice president of the American Cancer Society for the Greater DC/Baltimore region, said, "We are very grateful to Team Volanno for four amazing years of support. Thanks to team leader Dawn Amore and Volanno for caring so deeply about fighting breast cancer that they have raised over $137,000 to help beat this terrible disease through American Cancer Society-funded breast cancer research and free support services for breast cancer patients and their loved ones."
There are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. thanks in large part to discoveries, research, and free resources funded by the American Cancer Society. In 1985, the American Cancer Society (ACS) co-led the founding of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to educate women about the importance of early screening and routine mammograms for breast cancer detection and treatment. Since then, the breast cancer mortality rate has dropped by 40%. In 2025, more than 316,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the U.S.
According to the ACS's Cancer Facts & Figures 2025 report, approximately 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during their lifetime, and 1 in 43 will die from the disease. ACS recommends that women begin speaking with their physicians at age 40 about getting a mammogram.
