After-School Activities Canceled For DC Public Schools

D.C. Public Schools canceled all after-school programming on Wednesday due to the threat of severe storms from the remnants of Ida.

WASHINGTON, DC — District of Columbia Public Schools canceled all after-school programming on Wednesday due to the threat of severe storms from the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

The cancellation only affects after-school activities. Students will be dismissed from schools at the normal time. Staff will remain at schools until all students have left.

Other D.C. area school districts, including Fairfax County and Prince William County, have also canceled all after-school activities.

Following strong overnight storms, more thunderstorms are predicted for Wednesday afternoon and evening. With heavy rains falling in such a short period of time, the likelihood flooded streets, small streams and creeks increases.

Just before noon Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for the entire D.C. area until 7 p.m.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser activated the city's Emergency Operations Center on Wednesday to ensure city services are coordinated with the federal government and nearby jurisdictions in response to Tropical Depression Ida. The District's Emergency Operations Center and Joint Information Center began operating at noon.
