WASHINGTON, DC — A special education teacher in the D.C. Public Schools system is holding a fundraising campaign to purchase supplies for her classroom.
Teffiney Worthy is currently working on setting up her classroom for the 2021-22 school year and is hoping family, friends and the community will contribute money to support her efforts.
“I want to make my classroom a FUN and INVITING place for my students to learn,” Worth wrote on the GoFundMe campaign site. “If you don't already know, on an annual basis teachers spend on average $1.6 billion out of their own pockets, to set up their classrooms.”

The first day of school for students in D.C. schools is Monday, Aug. 30.
While school districts fund a small portion of classroom supplies, it is never enough for teachers. Most teachers are then tasked with purchasing supplies on our own, Worthy said.

“This will mean a world of difference not only to my students but to my school community,” she said. “Any money that I do not use will be provided to help my fellow co-workers set up their classroom for the incoming kiddos."
