WASHINGTON, D.C. — Even on highways and freeways in the District of Columbia, the maximum speed limit is 55 mph. Driving 33 over that could easily result in a ticket, or, for one car on display at the National Mall this week, a trip to an entirely different dimension.

The original DeLorean car from the 1985 hit movie “Back to the Future” has been on display at the National Mall this whole week, and will remain there until the end of the day Thursday, WTOP and others have reported.

The time-traveling movie star is inside a glass box, tucked between the National Air and Space Museum and the National Gallery of Art, according to the WTOP report.

In all three fictional movies of the Back to the Future trilogy, the DeLorean could travel through time when it hit 88 mph. The iconic car is one of the most replicated in the world, according to the “Cars at the Capital” event that brought the vehicle to D.C.

“The 1981 De Lorean DMC-12 "Time Machine" Hero Car used in the hit 1985 time-travel movie Back to the Future is an international cultural icon,” according to its description from Cars at the Capital.

“The car’s legacy transcends borders and generations as one of the world’s most recognizable and beloved automobiles.”

After its National Mall display, the DeLorean will be recorded and permanently archived in the Library of Congress, according to WTOP.

Cars at the Capital runs through the end of the month, and will feature a different notable car in history every week.
