Man Crashes Into U.S. Capitol Barricade, Shoots Himself: Police

After the crash early Sunday, the man began firing a gun into the air and fatally shot himself as police approached him, authorities say.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man shot and killed himself after he crashed into a barricade in front of the U.S. Capitol building early Sunday, according to U.S. Capitol Police.

Around 4 a.m., the man crashed into the barricade at East Capitol Street and 2nd Street, adjacent to the Library of Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court. After the man got out of the car, it caught fire and became engulfed in flames, according to police.

He fired several gunshots into the air along East Capitol Street before shooting himself when approached by police, according to authorities.

There were no other injuries in the crash and shooting, and a preliminary investigation indicates officers did not fire their weapons, police said.

Authorities do not believe the man was targeting a member of Congress. The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the man's death.
