Massive Water Main Break In VA Causes Problems In DC

A large water main break in Arlington had rippled effects for some D.C. residents.

WASHINGTON, DC — D.C. residents continue to be under a boil water advisory after a major water main break across the Potomac River in Arlington, Va.

Arlington County issued the alert shortly after 7 a.m. following a water transmission main break at Glebe Road and Chain Bridge. The break, which measured 36 inches, closed chain bridge, according to WTOP.

D.C. has released more details on what to do during this boil water advisory, including specific instructions on how to purify water and other recommendations.

D.C. Water also released the following interactive map showing impacted areas:

The rupture happened in the early morning hours of Friday morning in the Chain Bridge area of Arlington. Photos on social media show a large section of the road completely destroyed. D.C. Water tweeted that the water main break is "impacting many of our customers in Northwest DC, resulting in low or no pressure for some addresses."

They added that the pressure loss impacted customers west of Rock Creek Park.

The closure of Chain Bridge resulted in traffic problems as well. Drivers were unable to take outbound Canal Road or inbound Clara Barton Parkway, and traffic on Route 123 on the Virginia side was being turned around by police, according to the report. Traffic on Glebe Road was also being turned around, and D.C. police blocked Chain Bridge on their end.
