The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk of Washington, DC, takes place Saturday, October 14, 8am, at The Tidal Basin, followed by a post-walk party. We are proud to recognize Making Strides participant and breast cancer survivor Janice Johnson as one of the event's Faces of Hope ambassadors and thank her for allowing us to share her journey to inspire other survivors or those who have friends or family who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Janice Johnson was diagnosed thanks to a mammogram she received while in prison in 2001. Her cancer was detected and treated just as she was getting ready to come home after serving ten years.

Janice says that her cancer journey taught her “to fight to never give up on your dreams no matter where you are. I belonged to a group of girls – we called ourselves the Butterfly Sisters, who gave me the strength that I needed from letters they wrote me while I was in the prison hospital. In addition, there was a young lady I met there who was also struggling with her cancer and became my friend. She is no longer with us.

“My life, my friends, my family, and the people I come in contact with on a daily basis allow me to help them when they are feeling helpless, hopeless, and can't find their way. I am able to give back, whether it is telling my story, listening, or just an act of kindness. I have had two very dear friends whom I was able to walk with through their cancer struggle, which gave them hope.

“I chose Making Strides to help others who can't walk or are no longer here to do so.”
