WASHINGTON, DC — While Memorial Day weekend may start out with showers and thunderstorms in Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia, Sunday and Monday look to be sunny and mostly clear, according to the National Weather Service's latest forecast.

A chance of showers is expected to begin in the Washington, D.C. metro region around 2 a.m. on Friday, with an 80 percent chance of perception. Showers and possible thunderstorms may occur after 11 a.m., according to NWS.

Showers will continue overnight and into Saturday morning, with an 80 percent chance of a thunderstorm forming after 2 p.m. But, NWS predicts that things will begin to change over to mostly cloudy skies later, with temperatures near 78 and a 30 percent chance of precipitation.

Overnight on Saturday, showers and a thunderstorm are still possible, although NWS predicts clear skies and a 30 percent chance of precipitation.

Sunday and Monday are expected to be sunny with temperatures in the low- to mid-80s, according to NWS.

Accuweather is tracking a slow-moving storm that's making its way across the U.S.. The storm is expected to bring torrential downpours, severe thunderstorms and tornadoes to parts of the south-central region Wednesday night.

As the storm enters the northeast on Friday night through Saturday night, Accuweather forecasters say it could bring localized torrential downpours and pockets of thunderstorms.

Depending how quickly the storm travels up the East Coast and offshore, Memorial Day weekend should start off wet in the Washington, D.C. area and transition into sunshine on Sunday, although a chance of rain remains, according to Accuweather's forecast.

Expect Monday to be sunny and dry, with temperatures in the mid-80s, according to Accuweather's forecast.

Friday: Showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 11am. High near 79. South wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 2am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2am. Low around 64. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Saturday: A chance of showers before 8am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm. Mostly clear, with a low around 60. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 82.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 63.

Memorial Day: Sunny, with a high near 86.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 65.
