Air travelers at D.C.-area airports left behind tens of thousands of dollars in 2018, according to a report from the Transportation Security Administration.

Nationwide, air travelers left behind nearly $1 million, according to TSA's annual "Unclaimed Money at Airports" report submitted to Congress.

Airports in the Baltimore-Washington region -- Reagan National, Dulles, and BWI -- were high on the list of airports that saw the most money left behind. The money will be used for TSA checkpoint training requirements.

Dulles topped the list in the Baltimore-Washington region, with $31,090.38 left behind, followed by BWI with $14,771,16 and Reagan at $14,584.08.

"TSA makes every effort to reunite passengers with items they have left at checkpoints, but there are instances where loose change or other items go unclaimed," TSA said in a statement. "Typically, that means loose change that travelers remove from their pockets and place in checkpoint bins. Sometimes that means unmarked envelopes of cash. Those funds are deposited into a special account and documented."
