BOYNTON BEACH, FL -- Dashboard video released Monday shows the moment a Florida cop is struck by an SUV while chasing a suspected shoplifter across a busy street.

Thirty-four-year-old Greg Wertman of the Boynton Beach Police Department has been hospitalized in serious condition since the Feb. 27 incident along Gateway Boulevard.

"We are eternally grateful to Greg’s brothers and sisters at the Boynton Beach Police Department, who have not left his side since he was hurt and have made sure we have everything we need so that we can focus on his recovery; and to the miracle workers at Delray Medical Center, who are giving Greg the best possible care," Wertman's family said in a statement Monday.

"His condition continues to improve daily, which we believe has a lot to do with the power of prayer," the Wertman family said.

The video was shot from the 2012 Toyota Rav4 that struck the officer, according to Stephanie Slater of the Boynton Beach Police Department.

The officer's family also thanked other motorists who witnessed the incident and raced to help.

"You are heroes to us, and we hope to one day thank you personally," the officer's family said.

Boynton Beach Police Chief Michael G. Gregory said that the incident highlights the inherent dangers of the job.

"I extend my thanks to everyone in our community for their prayers, other law enforcement agencies who provided assistance, and to our elected officials for the support they’ve shown under harrowing circumstances," the chief added.
