"I was ready to forget it and let it go," Brown said in an 11 Alive news interview.

Brown was 20 years old when he was aboard one of the more than 7,000 vessels beached during the war, according to the Channel 11 report. He was among the few who stuck around while others abandoned the beached ship helping to bring the wounded back on board and plugging holes to make his ship sea-worthy again.
Brown survived the war and became mayor of Chamblee for 18 years. Now, after years of paperwork and family urging, Brown is finally a fully decorated war hero.
