John Lewis To Christen New Brookhaven School Named For Him
A ribbon-cutting for the new John Robert Lewis Elementary in Brookhaven will be held on Friday, Oct. 4.

BROOKHAVEN, GA — A ribbon cutting will be held for the new John Robert Lewis Elementary School in Brookhaven on Friday, Oct. 4. The new school opened its doors to students on August 5, 2019, after breaking ground in March 2018. The 900-seat school’s design mirrors other new schools in the district, including Barack H. Obama Magnet School for Technology, Rockbridge Elementary and Fernbank Elementary schools.
The school features a student courtyard, collaborative learning spaces, flexible fixtures and improved security measures, which include roll-down doors, a security vestibule and modern design factors quelling modern threats. The school is funded in part through voter-approved E-SPLOST (education special purpose local option sales tax) funds.
This is the first public school in the nation to bear Lewis' name. Lewis himself will be in attendance, joining district and community leaders in celebrating the school's opening.
