DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Douglas County schools and district offices will close Friday as Georgia hunkers down for a widespread winter storm that may be a menace to the East Coast.

Students will instead have a digital learning day. School officials said assignments and activities will be communicated from schools.

Teachers will offer virtual office hours, and all in-person activities or events will be canceled.

"We understand that this may cause some inconvenience; however, transitioning to digital learning allows our school system to ensure that learning continues while prioritizing everyone's safety. Our primary concern is the well-being of our students, families and staff. We will continue to closely monitor weather conditions throughout the weekend. Any additional weather-related changes or updates will be communicated through our regular channels, including our website, Facebook and SchoolMessenger," school officials said in a news release.
