Overturned Semi-Truck Carrying Chemicals Prompts Evacuation In Douglas Co.
A semi-tractor trailer was carrying 20,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate when it overturned Friday in Douglas County.
DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Dozens of homes had be evacuated after a semi-tractor trailer carrying 20,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate overturned Friday morning on Wilson Road in south Douglas County.
The crash happened around 7 a.m. between Highway 5 and Tyree Road, Douglas County officials said. The driver lost control for an unknown reason, and the semi-tractor trailer overturned when the driver overcorrected, county officials said.
The semi-truck belonged to a Whitesburg company and was transporting ammonium nitrate mixed with an emulsifier, county officials said.

The road was temporarily closed in both directions, and about 50 homes located within a half-mile of the area were evacuated, county officials said. Evacuees were temporarily taken to Dog River Library.
By 11 a.m., the semi-tractor trailer had been towed from the scene, and all combustible materials were safely removed, county officials said. The area was reopened.

No one was injured, and no chemicals or diesel fuel spilled onto the road, county officials said.
