Public Input Sought For South Douglas Scenic Byway
The proposed byway includes roughly 19 miles along Highway 166 highlighting the scenic, cultural, archaeological and historic corridor.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA — After the release of the promotional video for the South Douglas Scenic Byway in May, Douglas County is now developing the Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan — and county officials are asking for the public's help.
The proposed byway — which is part of the Georgia Scenic Byway Program — includes approximately 19 miles along Highway 166, from its intersection with Highway 92 to the western boundary with Carroll County. The CMP documents the vision for the byway and the steps needed to achieve the goals of promotion, preservation and enhancement of the historic land.
"Douglas County is a place of rich history and scenic beauty, and the South Douglas Scenic Byway is a special way to experience the best of Georgia, right here in Douglas County,” said Romona Jackson Jones, chairwoman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, in a news release.

The county is not building a new highway, widening the road or anything of the sort — the scenic byway designation allows the county to put limitations on new non-residential development, create opportunities for agri-business/agri-tourism development and preserving density-neutral buildout.
The byway study boundary spans roughly 29,500 acres, with about 80 percent falling within a traditional residential zoning district — either R-LD (residential low-density) or RA (residential agricultural).

“From Bear Creek to Dog River Reservoir to the Chattahoochee River Park, I think there is a way that we can truly make people’s journey one that they will remember if they choose to come through Douglas County,” District 3 Commissioner Tarenia Carthan said.
The CMP requires significant public involvement, guided by a steering committee comprised of local citizens and stakeholders, which has already held one open house meeting back in September.
The steering committee is inviting the community to provide feedback again on the initiation of the CMP at an open house Tuesday, Nov. 16 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., located at the Douglas County Courthouse, 8700 Hospital Drive, First Floor, Douglasville.
The plan includes an extensive analysis of existing zoning conditions and will present options for preserving the aforementioned density-neutral buildout of the area at the Nov. 16 open house.
