Dunwoody Crash Kills Girl; Driver Charged With DUI
A car was rear-ended during a crash that killed an 8-year-old girl and led to a driver being charged with vehicular homicide, police say.
DUNWOODY, GA — An 8-year-old girl died in a crash after a Toyota Tacoma rear-ended a Honda Civic on Saturday night in the 6600 block of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, police say.
The Civic left an apartment complex and traveled onto Peachtree Industrial when the crash happened around 9:30 p.m., Dunwoody Police said.
The driver of the Tacoma, who police identified as Jose Alejandro Cuahuizo-Varela, was accused of trying to run from the scene after rear-ending the Civic. However, Doraville officers were able to detain Cuahuizo-Varela, police said.

The young girl was taken to Children's Hospital of Atlanta, where she died of her injuries, police said. They did not indicate whether she was in the Tacoma or Civic, and she was not identified.
The driver of the Civic was taken to Grady Hospital, police said. Her condition was not immediately available.

Cuahuizo-Varela was arrested on charges of homicide by vehicle, hit and run, driving under the influence and reckless driving, police said. After being medically cleared, he was taken to the DeKalb County Jail, police said.
