Dunwoody Officer Dies Off-Duty, Police Say
"He dedicated his time and service, and his absence has left a void that will not easily be filled," police said of the late officer.

DUNWOODY, GA — A police detective died of an unknown cause Tuesday after eight years with the Dunwoody Police Department.
Police announced the death of Det. Jordan Laverty in a Facebook post published Wednesday. Police told Patch that Laverty was off-duty at the time of his death.
Before joining Dunwoody Police, Laverty spent three years with the DeKalb County Police Department, police said.

"He dedicated his time and service, and his absence has left a void that will not easily be filled. We are heartbroken and wrapping our arms around his family in love and support. Please keep his family, friends and colleagues at the department in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," Dunwoody Police said.
Police did not say how Laverty died. News of his death sparked condolences from the Paulding County Sheriff's Office.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our colleague from Dunwoody. Responding to a call involving a fellow law enforcement officer is never easy. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and the entire Dunwoody Police Department," Paulding authorities said in a statement.
The Dunwoody Police Foundation has organized a GoFundMe with a $75,000 goal for Laverty's family, including a wife and four children.
According to the online fundraiser, Lavery's memorial service will be held Thursday.
