Here are the top three stories today in Marietta:

  1. The Cobb County Police Department announced that a cold case has been solved, thanks to DNA forensic testing. Debbie Lynn Randall was 9 years old when she disappeared on Jan. 13, 1972 while she was walking to her home in Marietta. Sixteen days later, her body was discovered near Powers Ferry Road and Windy Hill Road. Forensic testing conducted on a piece of cloth found near Randall's body led investigators to name William B. Rose as the suspect in Randall's murder and rape. Rose was 24 years old in 1972, and he committed suicide two years later. Melvin Randall, Debbie Lynn's brother, expressed gratitude for the investigators who were committed to his sister's case. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
  2. The Special Operations S.T.E.P. Unit of the Cobb County Police Department is investigating a fatal collision involving a motorcycle. The incident occurred on Monday, Sep. 18, around 1:00 a.m. at the intersection of Blackwell and Canton roads. Investigators say that Jared Burriss, a 25-year-old from Marietta, was operating a Yamaha motorcycle northbound on Canton Road when he collided with a Hyundai Santa Fe that was traveling westbound through the intersection. Burriss was ejected from the motorcycle and was transported by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, where he died from his injuries. The Cobb County Police Department is asking anyone with information about this incident to contact (770) 499-3987. (Fox 5 Atlanta)
  3. Former Cobb County teacher Katie Rinderle is appealing her recent termination from the Georgia Board of Education. Rinderly was a fifth-grade teacher at Due West Elementary School when she was fired after reading a book to her students called "My Shadow is Purple." Rinderle and her attorneys have notified the Cobb County School District of their plans to appeal, and they have supplied the state board with over 1,000 pages of documentation to review. The state board will hold hearings and both sides will present oral arguments. It is uncommon for the Georgia Board of Education to weigh in on teacher terminations, and the board is not expected to reach a decision before its meeting in January 2o24.
