- A 60-year-old Marietta man was seriously injured by hit-and-run driver while sitting on bench on Thursday. Police are still searching for the driver, who left the scene in a black SUV after driving over a concrete curb and onto the sidewalk. Those with additional information about the incident are encouraged to contact investigators at 770-499-3987. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- In case you missed it, this week, a federal trial began that could reshape the political landscape in Georgia ahead of next year’s congressional and legislative races. The trial focuses on the state’s congressional map—which helped Republicans gain a U.S. House seat last year—arguing that the maps drawn during a special session in late 2021 violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Attorneys for the plaintiffs argue that Black voters have not seen their political representation grow despite jumps in the state’s overall Black population. The trial is expected to last throughout next week. (Cobb County Courier)
- The Cobb County Mental Health Court (MHC) celebrated its ten-year anniversary yesterday. The MHC provides crucial alternatives for individuals whose criminal violations are the result of behavioral factors, recommending treatment, counseling, and a system of supported accountability, rather than incarceration. The anniversary celebration marked the progress of the organization in helping individuals achieve a crime-free life of mental health and sobriety. (Cobb County Courier)
