Hurricane Irma: Marietta And Cobb Schools Make Decision On Classes For Wednesday, Sept. 13

Cobb County and Marietta school districts decide whether to resume classes on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

COBB COUNTY, GA -- The Cobb County School District along with Marietta City Schools announced that classes will resume on Wednesday Sept. 13. Metro Atlanta will begin to dry out after feeling the effects of fast-moving Hurricane Irma the past two days. Temperatures will rise as the sunshine returns Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The Marietta school district said that an assessment of the structural integrity of all its buildings checked out OK, so it was the first in the metro area to approve classes on Wednesday.

While Irma's destruction is still being assessed, the Cobb school district is in the process of collecting donations for people affected by Hurricane Harvey. (SIGN UP: Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. Or, if you have an iPhone, download the free Patch app.)

Many in Texas and the Gulf Coast are in desperate need of bottled water, baby products and other personal hygiene items, the school district said. The school district is asking that you have your donations in by Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Around the school district, students have had an active role in helping with relief efforts and donations. At Allatoona High School, collections are ongoing in what the school calls the “largest community event ever organized by Allatoona student government.” The Allatoona community is collecting items through Sept. 22 and will load a transfer truck with goods and deliver it to Houston.
