Here are the top three stories today in Marietta:
- Happy Helpings, Georgia's Summer Food Service Program, offers free breakfast and lunch meals to children aged 18 and younger at three Cobb County public libraries during summer break. The program is a collaboration between Cobb County Public Library and Georgia Educational Resources Inc., funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning. Unlike last year's drive-through service, this year's program provides sit-down meals, and adults aged 19 and older in school programs for persons with disabilities can also receive meals. (Cobb County Georgia)
- The Cobb County Library system in Marietta is committed to inclusivity and accessibility. They have an Accessibility Services Room or Sensory Space that provides assistive technology and resources for patrons with disabilities. The library aims to create a welcoming and calming environment where all guests can be themselves, accommodating various methods of soothing for those who may need it. Additionally, the library is working to bridge the digital divide by offering Chromebook laptops for residents to borrow, supporting access to educational, job search, and healthcare needs for individuals without reliable broadband service or smartphones. (Peach Tree TV)
- An unlicensed minor caused a crash in Marietta when a 2018 Cadillac Escalade veered off the road and hit a utility pole, resulting in a fire. A neighbor rushed to extinguish the fire and assist the occupants of the SUV. The driver, whose name and age were not disclosed, faces traffic citations, including driving without a license and reckless driving, and was released to their parent's care at the scene. - William Root House in Marietta currently has an exhibit called "Dressed for Summer," which explores how Southerners kept their homes cool before air conditioning. Additionally, they are hosting an educational program called "Bees & Botany" for students aged five to 10, where they can learn about plants and pollinators like bees and butterflies in the historic gardens of the Root House. The program takes place on Jul. 20-21, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Visit Marietta, GA via Facebook)
- The Cobb County Public Safety Foundation is organizing its annual First Responder 5K to support the men and women working in public safety in Cobb County. Participants can sign up here, and the event will take place at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, at The Battery Atlanta. The foundation encourages the community to join and show support for the first responders who work tirelessly to help others. (Cobb County Police Department via Facebook)
- Cobb County went under an air quality alert on Tuesday, Jul. 18, with Code Orange conditions indicating unhealthy outdoor air quality for some individuals. People who are sensitive to ozone, children, and those with heart or lung disease should avoid prolonged outdoor exertion during this time. (Cobb County Government via Facebook)
