Proposed Annual Salary Mayor $6,900 $10,350 Mayor Pro Tem $6,000 $9,000 Councilmembers $5,400 $8,100
According to City Clerk Susan Wuerzner, the council and mayor have not received a pay increase since Sept. 5, 1995.
Considering it's been more than 17 years since they've had a pay bump, Norcross looked at the compensation for councils and mayors in other metro Atlanta cities when the raise was first proposed in March.
The numbers for the other municipalities vary greatly. For example, according to the data presented in the policy work session agenda, the mayor and mayor pro tem of Lilburn receive $5,000 and the city council receives $3,500. For Suwanee, the mayor gets $15,000 annually, the mayor pro tem receives $11,000, and every city councilmember is paid $9,000.
And for the newly established Peachtree Corners, the mayor is compensated $9,000, and the council is paid $8,000. (Read more on the compensation for other cities' elected officials on the image attached to this article.)
For Norcross, it's possible that the proposed salaries could change or the proposal may not pass at all. If the mayor and council do decide to move forward with a new pay, the ordinance would be signed at the next city council meeting May 6.
Even if it is passed, the increased compensation wouldn't affect the current city councilmen and the mayor. It only would be applicable to elected officials who renew their terms or take office on or after Jan. 1, 2014.
Considering the Norcross mayor and city council haven't received an increase in pay since 1995, is it time for them to see one? Tell us in the comments.
Editor's Note: The proposed pay rate for the councilmembers has been changed from $9,000 to $8,100.
