- The Atlanta Vocal Project (AVP), a 35-member barbershop choir, showcases its four-part harmony at various events in Sandy Springs, including parades, festivals, funerals, weddings, and nursing homes. Recently, the group achieved third place in a barbershop competition in Louisville, KY, solidifying its status as one of the best barbershop groups globally. AVP not only focuses on creating beautiful music but also engages in community service projects and collaborates with local schools to introduce music and barbershop singing to young people.(11 Alive)
- Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino has invited career police officers to apply for open positions in nearby Cobleskill after seven officers, including the chief, quit due to frustration with the administration's new limits on overtime pay, leaving only three officers on duty. Residents have called for Mayor Rebecca Stanton-Terk's resignation, criticizing the cuts as unfair and posing a risk to public safety. Giardino hopes to fill the vacancies by offering additional hours and attracting part-time candidates from other areas, as a recent rule change allows his office to hire personnel from anywhere in the state. - Lifeline Animal Project, an Atlanta-based nonprofit, manages the DeKalb and Fulton County animal shelters, working to end the euthanasia of healthy animals. They have successfully improved conditions and reduced euthanasia rates, operating both shelters at no-kill levels, and saving over 90 percent of the animals that come in. However, the organization is facing challenges as more animals are coming in than being adopted, primarily due to a lack of affordable pet-friendly housing, and they encourage community members to foster, volunteer, and adopt from shelters to help address the issue.
