Here are the top three stories in Sandy Springs today:
- Canton Street business owners in nearby Roswell, Georgia, are requesting a delay in the proposed partial closure of the road to vehicular traffic, citing a broken trust with the mayor. The closure, aimed at transforming Canton into a pedestrian promenade during summer weekends, has faced opposition from restaurant and shop owners who fear a negative impact on business revenue due to limited parking and decreased visitor traffic. The mayor apologized for not informing the public earlier about the initiative, but tensions remain high. The road closure would need to be approved by the City Council before implementation. (The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- If you were commuting to Atlanta yesterday, chances are you saw the backups. All I-75/85 southbound lanes in Midtown Atlanta were closed due to a morning wreck near the Williams Street exit. Alternative routes suggested included Northside Drive, Spring Street, Peachtree Road, and Piedmont Road. More details are expected to emerge as the story develops. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- A detention officer in Fulton County, Georgia, was attacked by an inmate who bit off and swallowed part of her ear. The officer, Brooklyn Unitas, was distributing meals to inmates when the attack occurred. She suffered a broken elbow and required 18 stitches to close the wound. The inmate, James Dosen, was already in jail on a misdemeanor battery charge and is now facing additional charges of aggravated assault and battery against a law enforcement officer. (WSB Atlanta)
