  1. The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, focusing on potential civil rights violations at the county jail. The inquiry will assess living conditions, access to healthcare, excessive use of force by staff, and instances of violence among inmates. Additionally, the investigation will examine allegations of discrimination against individuals with psychiatric disabilities. This development comes after the death of Lashawn Thompson in the jail's mental health unit, revealing inadequate care and unsanitary conditions. (Subscription: WABE)
  2. Nearly 100,000 Georgians lost their health coverage as Georgia's Medicaid and PeachCare for Kids redetermination deadlines passed on Jun. 1, according to data released by the Georgia Department of Community Health. Around 57,000 individuals are still pending and will maintain their coverage temporarily while their eligibility is assessed. Renewals were carried out using the ex parte process, utilizing data from programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families to confirm eligibility for more than 50,000 renewed individuals. 3. The Fulton County Board of Commissioners has approved funding of $210,000 for research on potential reparations, leading to a divisive and uncomfortable conversation among the commissioners. The county will collaborate with the Atlanta University Center to study the historical context of slavery in the United States. Proponents argue that descendants of slaves should be compensated for the injustices inflicted upon their ancestors, while opponents express concerns about the timing and financial priorities of the county. The findings of the reparations task force are expected to be presented by late 2024. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
