The family-friendly series is designed to open Sandy Springs residents to the joy of nature right in their own back yards.

AGES 6+ – Join us at Lost Corner Preserve for our Discover Nature lecture series. These family friendly informational sessions are designed to open Sandy Springs residents (and neighbors!) to the joy of nature right in their own back yards. Children 16 and under must be accompanied by adult.

Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Did you know there were once mountain lions and wolves in Sandy Springs? Which Sandy Springs park boasts up to three bald eagles at a time? Come learn about the apex animal predators in our area, including foxes, bobcats, owls, eagles, and even the occasional bear. We will also discuss our newly-arrived coyotes and what to do if you encounter one.

Bats!

Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Our bats are facing a terrible, possibly extinction-causing disease: white-nose syndrome. Learn about the fascinating bats that are common to our area and what is being done to save them – and how you can help too! Bat box installation and tips will be covered as well.

Note: this program will be held at a special time to allow for sunset bat viewing over the Lost Corner gardens.

Common Owls of Georgia

Sunday, Nov. 12, 2017, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Back by popular demand! We will learn about the four common types of owls found in our area, including their sounds. Bring a headlamp or flashlight for an optional, short night hike to Falling Branch Creek, where we will look and listen for owls. We also may spot a possum or two in the beautiful trees of Lost Corner Preserve. No guarantees, but we did have a barred owl flyover last year!

Wildlife in Winter

Sunday, Dec. 10, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Enjoy a complimentary cup of hot cocoa in a cozy armchair in the beautifully restored Lost Corner Cottage as we learn about Georgia wildlife in winter. How do tiny birds survive an ice storm? Do any of our local animals hibernate? What happens to our butterflies and other insects? How can you make your yard a winter haven? Come learn about some of the amazing adaptations that allow our local wildlife to survive our Georgia winters.
