Maple Tree Cancer Alliance Provides Unique Oncology Exercise Program

TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Provides Specialized Oncology Exercise Program for Patients Through In-Person & Virtual Sessions

The Sandy Springs-based nonprofit TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation recently announced the extension of a partnership with Maple Tree Cancer Alliance involving the rollout of a new specialized oncology exercise program to support breast cancer survivors. This program - introduced at the beginning of 2023 - is the first of its kind in the Southeast.

“Extensive research has shown the game-changing role of exercise relieving cancer treatment related side effects, so we are pleased we can partner with Maple Tree and offer this unique program to our patients for the very first time,” said Mallory Mark, TurningPoint’s Clinical Director. “A combination of aerobic and strength training exercise improves the quality of life and overall physical fitness for cancer survivors, however access to these beneficial programs has previously been limited due to lack of specialized providers, finances, and transportation. Our partnership with Maple Tree changes that narrative.”

Ariel Hornberger, an exercise oncology instructor with Maple Tree, works with patients at TurningPoint to develop personalized programs regardless of where they are in their respective survivorship journeys. The 12-week program is free of charge and offered both virtually and in-person.

Southern Magnolia Charities provided the initial funding to launch this program, and as a result of the funds raised at the Pink Affair, TurningPoint’s signature annual fundraising gala held just last month, the program will continue through the remainder of the year. To date there have been more than 100 patient visits.

“The program has helped me to stay motivated to increase my exercise,” said TurningPoint patient Natalie Carpenter. “I have regained strength in my hand, my core is stronger than it was when I started, and I am also able to raise my arms higher.”
