Navigating the New Year: How to Make Your Resolutions Stick in 2024

By Dr. Aisha Redmond, MD, Kaiser Permanente of Georgia

Whether losing weight, eating better or reading more, January 1 often signals the start to New Year’s resolutions. But, as the days and months go by, these goals and aspirations quickly slip to a mere afterthought, leaving many no further than where they began. In fact, research suggests only 9% of Americans who make New Year’s resolutions complete them.

Whether goals are too lofty, change is too broad, or motivation dies too quickly, the failure to complete New Year’s resolutions has countless explanations. As you evaluate your 2023 achievements and challenges, here are a few tips to help you accomplish your goal.

Set Realistic and Achievable Goals

Ambitious objectives and resolutions often become overwhelming and make it difficult to identify a clear path forward, but manageable, concrete goals provide the clarity needed to assess progress and stay committed. A few ways to set realistic goals include:

  • Identifying priorities: When you identify what matters most, it narrows your focus to strive for one goal, greatly increasing the opportunity for success.
  • Being specific: Defining your goal with tangible milestones and measurable outcomes makes tracking progress less overwhelming and provides encouragement every step of the process.
  • Setting manageable targets: Divide your main goal into smaller, more manageable tasks and remember to celebrate along the way. Recognizing small victories boosts confidence and motivation, making it easier to tackle challenges and achieve the goal.

By incorporating these elements into your goal-setting process, you can create a comprehensive and sustainable approach to achieve resolutions and increase the likelihood of success.

Develop a Plan

Success and preparation go hand in hand. The more prepared you are, the greater your chance of attaining your goal. To maximize success, consider crafting a detailed plan outlining steps required to reach desired outcomes. This level of preparation provides direction and a sense of accomplishment.

While all plans look different, they are often comprised of a few achievable steps. For instance, when trying to eat healthier, your plan could include finding healthier alternatives, creating colorful meals, adding healthier food into your diet and more.

Practice Patience and Positivity

Establishing a resolution serves as a crucial reminder of the journey toward self-improvement. The habits you want changed took years to develop, so it's important to practice patience when working toward a drastic lifestyle adjustment, especially when it comes to your health. Patience will give you the grace needed to stay committed, even when you may not see immediate results.

A positive mindset is also key to staying motivated and enthusiastic about your resolutions. When you approach goals with optimism, you're more likely to be inspired to maintain a long-term commitment.

Seek Accountability and Assistance

As humans, we often dislike the process of asking for help. As you change your lifestyle and behavior, it is important to reach out to friends or family members. They are a great support system and serve as a reminder about why we chose to change in the first place.

It is also important to seek accountability with a community that shares similar goals. Whether an exercise or support group or even professionals like trainers, nutritionists or therapists, a knowledgeable community can often be the key to staying motivated and encouraged throughout the process.

As you begin your journey toward fulfilling your 2024 New Year’s Resolution, keep in mind that transformation takes time. Every stride serves as evidence of your dedication and personal development in changing your life. Keep your commitment strong and you will see results. By setting realistic and achievable goals, developing a plan, practicing patience and positivity and seeking accountability and assistance, you equip yourself with the tools needed to overcome obstacles and succeed.
