Riverwood Art Students Participate in Atlanta Botanical Garden Events
Several Riverwood International Charter School art students took part in the Art Throwdown at Atlanta Botanical Gardens.
SANDY SPRINGS, GA - Art students from Riverwood International Charter School (RICS) recently participated in several events at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens (ABG). On October 1st, 25 students participated in the annual Art Throwdown, Atlanta’s interscholastic high school art competition. Held each year at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, the Art Throwdown brings students from high schools across Atlanta to engage in a different kind of art competition. Each high school artist is presented with a unique challenge such as drawing when you cannot see your hands or the paper, drawing from live models, or working with a group of artists to construct a sculpture in 30 minutes or less. As Perrin Turner, an early supporter of the event since 2009, said, "The idea is to bring high school artists together and provide a live experience with visual art where friends, family, and the larger community can get a closer look at the creative process. Participating high school artists also get hands-on experience geared towards the next level of artistic expression and learning, whether that means attending college or working in a professional environment."
Riverwood placed 2nd overall out of eight high school teams who participated. RICS students either won or placed in the following categories: Plein-aire Impressionism painting, Sume-I ink painting, Digital Photography, Site Sculpture, Vine Videos, Botanical Illustration and Haiku Poetry. Members of Riverwood’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) are also participating in the annual Scarecrows in the Garden at the ABG. This fun event showcases more than 100 spooky, creative scarecrows handcrafted by businesses, individuals, schools and organizations. NAHS students created a scarecrow in memoriam to the celebrities who have passed away this year – David Bowie, Prince, Gene Wilder and Alan Rickman. More information can be found at atlantabg.org.
