From Mobility to Independence: FODAC’s Role in Providing Critical Assistive Technology

Tucker, GA –(April 2025 ) – As the nation observes National Assistive Technology (AT) Awareness Month, Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC) is highlighting the transformative impact of assistive technology in empowering individuals with disabilities. As the largest 501(c)(3) provider of Home Medical Equipment (HME) reuse in the U.S., FODAC plays a critical role in ensuring that people of all abilities have access to the tools they need to live independently and thrive.

Assistive technology includes wheelchairs, mobility scooters, adaptive communication devices, home modifications, and more, all designed to enhance daily living and employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. However, the cost and accessibility of these essential tools remain a challenge for many families. The organization helps veterans, seniors, and children across Georgia and beyond while partnering with state agencies, rehabilitation centers, and local businesses to increase assistive technology awareness and accessibility.

“Access to assistive technology is not just a convenience—it’s a necessity,” said Chris Brand, President & CEO of FODAC. “By refurbishing and redistributing medical equipment, we bridge the gap for thousands of individuals who would otherwise go without. Our mission is to make sure that no one is left behind simply because they cannot afford the tools they need.”

Breaking Barriers with Assistive Technology

FODAC donates $12–15 million worth of Home Medical Equipment (HME) annually and has served all 50 states and four U.S. territories in disaster relief, working with FEMA and our national VOAD partners. Brand has been “boots on the ground” serving Disaster Relief with equipment, including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Houston.

FODAC’s impact extends beyond providing mobility aids. The organization also supports disaster relief efforts, offers the innovative alternative financing for assistive technology through the CreditAble program to help clients access funds for assistive technology, and runs a robust volunteer program that saves valuable resources. Its commitment to green practices is equally impressive—refurbishing nearly 10,000 items annually, keeping 400 tons of metal and batteries out of landfills, and achieving a 70% reduction in energy costs through solar power and other upgrades.

This month, FODAC is calling on the community to:

✅ Donate gently used medical equipment to help individuals in need

✅ Advocate for increased funding and awareness of AT resources

✅ Engage by sharing success stories and spreading the word about FODAC’s mission
