Man Died After Falling Or Jumping From Metra Train: Coroner

The man was trying to get from a northbound to a southbound train when he either fell or stepped off while it was moving, officials said.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL — A 30-year-old Mundelein man died after either falling from or stepping off a moving Metra train when he learned he was headed in the wrong direction — northbound instead of southbound, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office.

Allen Chiquini, of Mundelein, died from blunt force injuries consistent with being struck by a train in the area of Ellis Avenue and Winchester Road in Libertyville at about 5:30 p.m. Friday, according to preliminary results from an autopsy performed by the coroner's office.

On Wednesday, the coroner's office shared more details regarding what led to Chiquini's death. According to the coroner's office.

Chiquini's body was found between the stop where he entered the northbound train and the next scheduled stop, according to the coroner's office. While investigating his death, the coroner's office determined Chiquini tried to open the passenger doors of the train but instead went out through a rear door on the train.

He then climbed over a safety barrier and either fell or tried to step off the moving train, according to the coroner's office.

A crew member from an outbound train spotted Chiquini's body along the train tracks at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday and stopped the train to report the incident, according to the coroner's office news release.

Authorities responded and found Chiquini unresponsive in the area of Ellis Avenue and Winchester Road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Toxicology testing is pending, coroner's office officials aid Wednesday.

Earlier in the week, Metra officials said their investigation had not revealed if a Metra train or a freight train fatally hit Chiquini.

On Thursday, Stephen Newton, deputy chief with the coroner's office, Chiquini was on a Metra train.

"He got on the northbound train thinking it was a southbound train. The train that saw and reported him was the next train to pass through the area," Newton said.
