Charges Tied To Peaceful Protests Won't Be Prosecuted: Foxx

Cook County State's Attorney Kimberly Foxx announced Tuesday her office won't prosecute minor offenses tied to recent peaceful protestors.

PALATINE, IL — Cook County State's Attorney Kimberly Foxx announced Tuesday that protesters arrested on accusations of minor offenses such disorderly behavior, public demonstration and curfew violations related to recent area protests will not face charges, according to a statement prepared by Foxx. This announcement comes after weeks of protests in Chicago and several suburbs, during which people gathered to call for criminal justice reform, police accountability, and systemic change, according to the statement.

Under the Cook County State’s Attorney Office’s (CCSAO) new policy, prosecutors will review these incidents on a case-by-case basis to determine if there is reason to proceed in the interest of public safety, the statement reads.

“Over the past month we have seen righteous anger, collective grief, action, and demands for justice,” Foxx said, in the statement. “I’m encouraged by the efforts of those who are standing against years of racial injustice to resoundingly state that ‘Black Lives Matter’. We have the right to peacefully protest for change, but those choosing to exploit this moment, by causing harm and damage, will be held accountable.”
