Two people are in custody, and Palatine police are working with other law enforcement agencies to investigate the early Monday incident.

PALATINE, IL — Two people were taken into custody early Monday in connection with a vehicle break-in that involved gunfire, two police chases and an eventual car crash, according to Palatine police. It isn't clear if charges have been filed yet against the individuals.

According to police, officers responded to a call just after midnight Monday, June 25, concerning a vehicle break-in in the 600 block of Victoria Drive. The vehicle's owner confronted the suspects, who are accused of opening fire on the owner, police said.

The owner told police that the suspects fled the scene in a black Mercedes. A description of a second possible getaway car was given by the owner, as well, but police did not provide details about that vehicle.

Following the break-in call, authorities soon discovered that the Mercedes had been stolen in Deer Park, and the theft had been reported to the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Des Plaines police then located the Mercedes and tried to pull over the car. But the suspects fled, and police eventually stop giving chase.

The Mercedes was located again, this time by Illinois State Police. And again, the suspects fled when officers tried to stop them, police said. The pursuit ended when the Mercedes eventually crashed, and two people were apprehended by police.
