Wheaton Public Library To Host 'Race In Illinois' Virtual Event
Join literary historian Dr. Caroline Kisiel and sociologist Dr. Brian Miller for an historical overview of the state's relationship to race.

At its founding as a state in 1818, Illinois passed its constitution as a free state. But slavery had existed in the region for centuries, and its impact on American approaches to race affected counties in Southern Illinois for decades after incorporation. As Illinois grew as a state, this later affected suburbs outside Chicago, including Wheaton.
