MARYLAND — Democrat April McClain Delaney has won the race for Maryland's U.S. House of Representatives seat, defeating Republican Neil Parrott by a narrow 8,764 votes, according to unofficial election returns.

The Maryland State Board of Elections website on Friday afternoon showed Delaney had received 174,514 votes for 51.18% vs. Parrott's 165,750 votes for 48.61% with all precincts reporting.

An NBC News projection called the race Friday, three days after voters headed to the polls to decide who would represent Maryland's 6th Congressional District.

"I am deeply honored and humbled by the trust the people of Maryland’s 6th District have placed in me,” Delaney said in a press release obtained by MoCo360. “Since the beginning of this campaign, our message has been clear: it’s time for common sense, common ground leadership that puts people over politics, defends our freedoms and values, and builds a future centered on unity."

On Saturday, Parrott issued a statement thanking his supporters and vowed to wait for a final vote count.

“I am extremely grateful for the huge amount of work that was put into this campaign by volunteers in all five counties. As a result of this effort and sacrifice, the Parrott Campaign will wait until all the votes are counted before declaring victory or defeat,” he said.

The district covers northwest Montgomery County, all of Frederick County and all of Western Maryland.

Republican leaders are projecting confidence that they will keep control of the U.S. House as more races were decided in their favor Thursday; however, Democrats insist they still see a path toward the majority and sought assurances every vote will be counted.

The Republicans won control of the U.S. Senate early Wednesday.

A federal employee, Delaney works in communications for the U.S. Department of Commerce. As part of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, she oversaw plans to expand broadband access and connect Americans to reliable, high-speed internet.

During her campaign, Delaney said she plans to fight for universal health care and send aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Addressing climate change and protecting LGBTQIA+ rights are additional goals for Delaney.

Parrott represented Washington County in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2011 to 2023. He also ran for Congress multiple times but was never been elected to Capitol Hill. Parrott is a traffic engineer, who worked for the State Highway Administration and the City of Frederick before starting a small business.
