New Council Lines Haven't Tempted Paulshock (Yet)

Proposed maps settle residency issue by putting Perry Hall business and Kingsville home in the same district.

Bill Paulshock is a man who, according to him, is focused on three things these days, and none of them involve a 2014 campaign for County Council.

Redistricting maps proposed earlier this summer aren't tempting the Perry Hall businessman to commit to a 2014 campaign—at least not yet.

"I've been focused on my family, business and community," Paulshock said.

Part of that plan includes changing the configuration of the 5th District, a seat for which Paulshock campaigned in 2010.

The district, under the proposal, would continue to stretch from Perry Hall to Towson. It would now also include a large precinct that votes at Kingsville Elementary School.

The Democrat narrowly lost to Mike Ertel, a Towson resident and community leader, in what became a high-profile race because of issues surrounding Paulshock's residency.

Paulshock was registered to vote at a home that was attached to and fronted his seafood business on Belair Road. He claimed repeatedly that the address was his domicile even though he maintained a home with his wife and children in Kingsville.

Ertel made sport of the residency issue in an online campaign video that featured Paulshock's home and business as backdrops. (The video has since disappeared.)

For now, Paulshock remains noncommittal. He isn't running, but he would also not say he wouldn't consider it at some future date. There's a lot of time between now and a filing deadline for the 2014 election.

If the new districts are approved, as expected, his residency issue would evaporate as campaign fodder.

In that event, if Paulshock decides to run again for the council seat, he'll be in the 5th District whether he sleeps at the business or not.
