Szeliga for Comptroller?

First-term Republican tells Annapolis Capital she's interested though friends say it was a joke.

Add Kathy Szeliga's name to the list of those interested in running for state comptroller.

Or not. Maybe. Whatever.

Szeliga and fellow Republican Del. Susan Aumann traveled to the annual Tawes Crab and Clam Bake in Crisfield, MD two weeks ago.

While there, she told our friend Earl Kelly of the Annapolis Capital that while Aumann came for the food she was there for another reason:

"We came together to see the politicians, to see who's running for what, and to see what our next office might be," Szeliga said.

Szeliga, who owns a construction business with her husband, said she wants to run for state comptroller.

Whether or not she was serious remains a bit of a mystery. Szeliga has not returned multiple phone calls seeking comment.

State Sen. J.B. Jennings, who is in Myrtle Beach, said during a phone interview Monday that he's not so sure Szeliga was serious.

"I think that was a tongue-in-cheek comment," Jennings said.

If Szeliga was serious, she is the first county Republican to express an interest in the job and the second delegate from the county.

Democratic Del. Jon Cardin said last month he is also exploring a possible .
