Officer Shot Outside Police Station Near UMBC, Suspect In Custody: Authorities

An officer was shot outside a Baltimore County police station near UMBC, authorities said. He was rushed to Shock Trauma for surgery.

CATONSVILLE, MD — A police officer was shot Thursday outside a Catonsville police station and was in surgery late in the afternoon, authorities said.

The Baltimore County Police Department said an unidentified person approached an officer assigned to the Wilkens Precinct and fired at him around 2:30 p.m.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County officials said the suspect is in custody.

The officer was taken to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

"We would ask that you please keep this officer in your prayers as well as his family members," the Baltimore County Police Department said in a press release. "Additional information will be provided once the officer is out of surgery."

WBFF reported the shooting happened outside the police station.

WBAL's news helicopter captured video of first responders treating a person in the precinct's parking lot. The helicopter also spotted an ambulance taking the patient to Shock Trauma.

The precinct where the shooting happened is located just outside the UMBC campus. The station, located at 901 Walker Ave., is directly across the street from the UMBC Parking Services building.

Students were asked to avoid the area of Walker Avenue.

Officers were still on the scene investigating as of 5:42 p.m.

"Our police department has let the campus know that the shooter is in custody, but to avoid the area due to continued police activity. Emergency updates will be posted at the top of our home page umbc.edu," UMBC spokesperson Cherie Ann Parker told Patch in an email.
