Underground Hazmat Fire In Parkville Prompts Warning
Firefighters urged people in Baltimore County to avoid nearby manholes as they battled an underground blaze.

PARKVILLE, MD — Smoke was visible for miles from an underground fire Wednesday morning in Parkville, according to authorities.
Crews were called to the 9600 block of Harford Road after 9 a.m. for fire in the storm drains, where an unknown product had ignited, the Baltimore County Fire Department reported.
"Avoid the area while BCoFD works to put out fire," Baltimore County Emergency Management said in a statement around 9:45 a.m. "Avoid any nearby manholes that may have smoke coming from them."

After 10 a.m., officials said the fire was under control, and the Maryland Department of the Environment was working on cleanup. Some area roads were closed during the response.

Nearby businesses were evacuated and have since reopened, officials said. No injuries have been reported.
