Arlington Select Board To Meet About Delaying Election
The Town Election is currently scheduled for April 4, which would fall in the middle of the state's restrictions on public gatherings.
ARLINGTON, MA — The Arlington Select Board will meet Monday to discuss delaying the Town Election, scheduled for April 4, the Town Clerk's office said. The meeting will be held remotely over the Zoom app, and the public will be able to join on their phones or computers. The phone number and meeting ID will be posted on the town website.
Town Counsel Doug Heim told YourArlington holding the election April 4 would break the state of emergency and restrictions on public gatherings during the coronavirus crisis. A proposal has been submitted to the state Legislature giving the secretary of state the authority to postpone local elections in cases of emergency, the site reported.
If the Board decides to postpone the election, Arlington would have to receive a court order, unless the state Legislature acts before Monday. Officials are also considering postponing Town Meeting up to 30 days, according to YourArlington.
