Coronavirus Cases 'Jump' In Arlington

Also this week: the town is working with supermarkets to enact safety guidelines and advises residents to wear a mask when leaving home.

ARLINGTON, MA — Health officials said Arlington saw a "jump" in confirmed cases of the coronavirus Thursday. There are currently 60 positive cases of the virus after a week where the case count remained steadily in the 40s, according to the latest numbers from the town.

The age breakdown of cases is:

  • one case 19 years of age and under
  • 6 cases 20-29 years of age
  • 4 cases 30-39 years of age
  • 7 cases 40-49 years of age
  • 9 cases 50-59 years of age
  • 9 cases 60-69 years of age
  • 24 cases 70 years of age and over

Twenty-eight of the cases are men and 32 are women. There have been two deaths attributed to the coronavirus in Arlington.

Health officials urge all residents to stay home and away from anyone who does not live in their house, including relatives. If you have to go out to conduct a necessary errand, like grocery shopping, picking up medication, or checking in on a neighbor who may need assistance, it is crucial you practice social distancing – keep six feet away from others – and wear a cloth face covering.

State Issues Guidance for Grocery Store Safety

Arlington's Health Department continues to work with local grocery stores to provide guidance on universal standards in line with the guidance provided by the Mass. Commissioner of Public Health to keep patrons safe while conducting essential errands. Patrons at these establishments will begin to see markings and decals highlighting safety instructions.

Protect Yourself from COVID-19 Scams and Financial Scams

When there is a crisis there are people who will take advantage of the situation. There are numerous scams related to COVID-19 which should be reported to the National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline. Peirce Field and Playgrounds Still Closed

Do Not Congregate in parks and on bike path. Arlington Police continue to field complaints of people on Peirce field (behind Arlington High School). The field is closed to all use and police will take notice. While on the bike path or in a park, do not congregate and be sure to keep six feet away from others. It is advised you wear a mask when running or biking, especially on the bike path and in areas where you come in contact with others.
