Malden Rewarded For Its Solar Power Progress
The city earned a designation from a national solar program.
MALDEN, MA — The city has received a bronze designation from a national program for its solar energy initiatives.
According to Mayor Gary Christenson, being a Solsmart designee will enable residents and businesses to acquire the technology more easily. Becoming SolSmart designated by 2026 was one of the City’s key objectives from its 2024 Climate Action Plan, and it was one of the first initiatives taken up by Malden’s Climate Action and Sustainability Commission.
The city conducted an internal zoning review, set up an online permitting platform, adopted the Board of Building Regulations and Standards Stretch Code, posted a Solar Permitting Checklist on its website, and installed its own solar panels on certain municipal buildings in order to earn its designation. The SolSmart Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office and launched in 2016.
