Melrose Adding Mobile Payment Option To MBTA Parking Lots

Beginning March 7, residents and visitors will be able to use PayByPhone to pay at hundreds of parking spaces in the city.

MELROSE, MA — Drivers will soon be able to use their phone to pay for parking at hundreds of parking spaces in the city's MBTA lots.

The city said Wednesday more the system would work for more than 900 spaces in off-street parking lots. A spokesperson on Thursday clarified it will only be the three MBTA lots in Melrose: Highlands, Wyoming and Cedar Park.

Beginning March 7, residents and visitors will be able to use PayByPhone to pay at spaces in those lots. The city originally said it would begin March 28.

"We’re thrilled to bring a safe and easy-to-use parking payment option to the City of Melrose," Mayor Paul Brodeur said in a release. "PayByPhone has been a tremendous partner in our effort to simplify and enhance the parking experience for Melrose residents and the City’s visitors. Our hope is that the use of this application is effortlessness, so people can focus on enjoying all that our City has to offer."

More than 35 million drivers use PayByPhone, according to the website. The app sends texts when the parking time expires, allowing the option to extend the parking time via phone.
