MELROSE, MA — More than 30 people gathered together outside of the Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church at 70 West Emerson St. Thursday night to protest an event that involved drag activists.

The church was holding one of its “Thoughtful Thursday” speakers series that featured the drag activist group Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. According to the church’s Minister Rev. Dr. Susanne Intriligator, the group spoke to attendees about their creative activism and community service.
Meanwhile, the protestors were outdoors chanting prayers such as “Our Father” and “Hail Mary” repeatedly. Banner signs were being held up that called to stop exposing children to people who partake in or support drag. One sign portrayed the logo and wordmark of the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family, and Property.

“Church staff tried to converse with them to see if they were neighbors, but they would not stop chanting in order to talk,” Intriligator said. “We believe this group shows up anywhere drag queens are advertised.”
