Red Hatters for June 2025

by Shirley Rabb

It is finally a time when we can say winter is over; and the rains have partially let up so we are on the move again.

June 12th we headed for an old standby when we drove to Concord for lunch at the jail.

Eddie is the man in charge, and the person that oversees the prisoners that have signed up for the Culinary class.

Although the Concord Jail has closed, the Fife and Drum lunch room is still open around the corner from the original jail.

There are 10 or 12 table available and one lunch serving at 11:30 am. We have been there when people are waiting but we always call ahead, and today a table for 8 was set up for us as we arrived.

Today the selections were meat ball subs with french fries, or baked chicken, baked potato slices and vegetable.

This was after salad and wonderful broccoli cheddar soup. Cold drinks or coffee or tea are included and...choice of snicker doodle cookies of carrot cake for dessert.

The price...$3.21. Yup for the whole meal served by the men that are serving very low grade felonies.

It is a fun place where you can only enter with an ID, and the cash to pay. Security is still the important part of the fun, and it was a fun time today.

On a drizzly June 14th. we ventured to the Pelham New Hampshire Town Hall.

This was a performance put on by the Hobbs Community plays in Pelham. This was a radio play called Vintage Hitchcock!

We were entertained with guitar and piano music from Hitchcock movies before the performance.

There was sound effects done by a whole bunch of electric equipment and three young men

But the show was performed by some of the members of the Pelham Senior Center; and they were great.

Reading from scripts in front of microphones they changed hats depending on the characters they were portraying.

The readings were from three Hitchcock movies; The Lodger, Sabotage, and The 39 Steps. All scary as Hitchcock movies were.

The performers sat straight up in chairs on the stage and stood to read as their parts came up. It was a fun performance, and it reminds us how great seniors are.

Because of the late afternoon performance we took our Red Hat member who lives in Pelham home and we headed back to Melrose.

Our stop for dinner was at the Main Street Grill in Wakefield and we were a happy group of seniors ourselves.

It was a fun, and long day, but another one that we enjoyed.

June 17th was a day for us alone. One of our members is moving to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina and this was a kind of going away party.

Lunch was at Jimmy's Steer house in Saugus, in a quiet back room.

Lunch, happy talk, and remembrance was what it was all about. That's what you do with friend's, so try to remember to take a friend out to lunch, just because you can.

June 21st. and Beautiful The Carole King Musical at the Regal Players in Waltham; that was our destination on this day.

This play was all it was meant to be...excellent. The story and the music brought back memories of the songs; and we learned a great deal about the life of Carol King.

It was a lovely performance.

We decided to eat locally in Waltham at Grassfields., since we had eaten at their other locations in the past.

The food was excellent and their famous rice equal to any but...the service was not as good as we have had in so many other places.

Although we will be attending other plays at the Regal Players in Waltham; this restaurant will not be on our "place for dinner".

There was talk of the play and our usual chatter of "Whats next?". And as we drove home in different direction in three cars we decided it was still a good Red Hat day..
