City staff will discuss the roadwork at Powder House Boulevard and Alewife Brook Parkway, and residents will have a chance to ask questions.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The City of Somerville has announced it will be hosting a virtual community meeting to discuss final plans for the upcoming reconstruction of the intersection at Powder House Boulevard and Alewife Brook Parkway.
The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 1. Those wishing to attend can register online.
With construction set to begin this winter, the meeting will feature city staff reviewing the final design for the project and providing an overview of the construction process and a timeline for completion. The city has said it expects construction to last through the fall of 2024.

At the meeting, residents also will have a chance to ask questions about the project and the construction process.
According to the city, the intersection has been targeted for reconstruction because it is considered a high-crash location. There were 48 crashes at the intersection between 2014 and 2021, the city said.

"Focusing efforts on the intersections where the greatest number of crashes occur is a key part of the city's Vision Zero Action Plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries from our transportation system," the city said in a statement.
The city has said that the construction at Powder House Boulevard and Alewife Brook Parkway will involve the reconstruction of the existing traffic circle to create a T-shaped intersection with traffic signals.
The new design is expected to improve safety for all road users by enhancing pedestrian and bicycle connections, improving access for residents and slowing drivers, according to the city.
In addition to improving the intersection's design, the construction also will include updating the underground infrastructure and creating a new shared street, the latter is a residential street that prioritizes people walking, rolling and biking, the city said.
